Freshen Up Carpets and Beds

Keeping carpets and beds fresh can be a challenge, especially with pets and kids. Here’s a simple method using nontoxic ingredients:

Ingredients:

- Baking soda

- Essential oils (your choice, but lavender, sweet orange, and lemon are great options)

Steps:

1. Prepare Baking Soda Mix: In a bowl, mix 1 cup of baking soda with 20 drops of essential oils. The baking soda acts as a natural deodorizer, while the essential oils add a pleasant scent.

2. Apply Baking Soda Mix: Sprinkle the baking soda mixture evenly over the carpet and bed. Allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes. The longer it sits, the better it can absorb odors.

3. Vacuum: Thoroughly vacuum the carpets and bed to remove the baking soda. You’ll be left with a fresh, clean scent without the use of harsh chemicals.

Homemade Laundry Soap

Commercial laundry detergents can contain a plethora of chemicals. Making your own laundry soap is simple and cost-effective. Here’s a recipe that’s both effective and gentle on your clothes:

Ingredients:

- 1 cup Sal Suds

- 4 cups water

- 30 drops essential oil (choose your favorite scent)

Steps:

1. Mix Ingredients: In a large jug or container, combine 1 cup of Sal Suds with 4 cups of water. Stir or shake well to mix.

2. Add Essential Oils: Add 30 drops of your chosen essential oil to the mixture. Essential oils not only add fragrance but also have antibacterial properties.

3. Use: Use ½ cup of this homemade laundry soap per load of laundry. For high-efficiency (HE) washers, use ¼ cup per load.

Nontoxic Scent Boosters

Adding a scent booster to your laundry can make your clothes smell amazing without the need for synthetic fragrances. This simple recipe uses Epsom salts and essential oils:

Ingredients:

- 2 cups Epsom salts

- 20 drops essential oil

Steps:

1. Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, mix 2 cups of Epsom salts with 20 drops of essential oil. Stir well to ensure the essential oil is evenly distributed.

2. Store: Store the mixture in an airtight container.

3. Use: Add 1 tablespoon of the scent booster to your washing machine per load. The Epsom salts will dissolve in the water, leaving a delightful scent on your clothes.

By incorporating these nontoxic cleaning methods into your routine, you can create a healthier environment for your family. These simple recipes are not only effective but also cost-efficient, using ingredients you likely already have at home. Plus, the addition of essential oils adds a pleasant, natural fragrance that synthetic chemicals can’t match.
