How to make nontoxic bug spray (that works)

Summer is here, and with it comes the season of outdoor fun and, unfortunately, pesky bugs. While store-bought bug sprays can be effective, many contain harmful chemicals that can be harsh on sensitive skin, especially for kids. That's why we're excited to share this simple DIY nontoxic bug spray recipe that's safe for the whole family.

Our DIY kit includes everything you need to make this bug spray at home: lavender oil, tea tree oil, fractionated coconut oil, and a spray bottle. Here’s how to make your own bug repellent in just a few easy steps!

Ingredients:

- 5 drops of tea tree oil

- 5 drops of lavender oil

- 1 teaspoon fractionated coconut oil

- 2 oz of witch hazel or water (whichever you prefer)

Instructions:

  1. Combine ingredients: In the spray bottle, combine essential oils, carrier oil, and top with witch hazel or water.

  2. Shake Well: Secure the spray bottle cap and shake well to combine all ingredients.

  3. Label and Store: Label your spray bottle with the contents and date. Store in a cool, dark place to maintain the effectiveness of the oils.

How to Use:

Spray the bug repellent generously on exposed skin before heading outside. Reapply as needed, especially after swimming or sweating. Avoid spraying directly on the face.

Why This Bug Spray Works:

- Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, tea tree oil helps keep bugs at bay.

- Lavender Oil: This oil not only repels insects but also has a calming effect, making it perfect for kids.

- Fractionated Coconut Oil: This carrier oil is light and absorbs quickly, ensuring that the essential oils are safely diluted and easy to apply.

- Witch Hazel: If you choose witch hazel, it acts as a natural astringent, soothing skin irritations and providing an extra layer of protection.

The Benefits of Nontoxic Bug Spray:

Using a nontoxic bug spray means you can enjoy the outdoors without exposing your family to harsh chemicals. This DIY bug spray is not only effective but also gentle on the skin, making it ideal for kids and those with sensitive skin.
