Do essential oils expire?

The short answer is yes.

Essential oils can expire, which can vary depending on the type of oil. Essential oils have an expiration date printed on the bottle, so if you’ve had a few essential oils sitting in the back of your cabinet for a while, it’s important to check the expiration date.

What happens if an oil expires?

If you realize you’ve been using an expired oil, don’t freak out! Expired essential oils aren’t dangerous they’re just less effective.

Extending the life of your oils

Prevent your essential oils from expiring early and ensure they stay potent by following these tips!

Keep your oils closed

The longer a bottle of oil is uncapped, the more the oil is exposed to the oxygen in the air. After using an essential oil, make sure you close the cap tightly. Excess exposure to oxygen begins the oxidation process.

Store your oils away from light and heat

The best place to store your essential oils is in a cool, dry place. Somewhere away from direct sunlight or any direct heat and light sources.

Signs it may be time to toss your oil

  • If the smell of the oil has changed since you first opened the bottle

  • If the color has changed or become cloudy

  • If the consistency is thicker or thinner than when you first opened the bottle.
