Why a patch test is essential and how to do it

When you’re using an oil for the first time, it’s essential to start with a patch test. While essential oils are generally regarded as safe, anything can cause sensitivity or allergic reaction.

A patch test is a simple and quick way to determine if an essential oil will cause sensitivity or a reaction while reducing exposure to your skin.

First things first - always dilute

Diluting helps the skin absorb the essential oil better and reduces the risk of irritation. Anytime you’re using an essential oil topically, dilute it with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil.

You can learn more about which carrier oils to use here!

For Children -

Children under 2: follow a .25-.5% dilution ratio or 1 drop of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil

Children ages 2-5: follow a .5% dilution ratio or 1 drop of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil

Children ages 6-10: follow a 1% dilution ratio or 2 drops of essential oils per 10ml of carrier oil

For Adults -

Frail or elderly: follow a .5% dilution ratio or 1 drop of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil

Pregnant or breastfeeding and face care: follow a 1% dilution ratio or 2 drops of essential oils per 10ml of carrier oil

General wellness, massage, skin care, or daily use: follow a 3% dilution ratio or 5-6 drops of essential oils per 10ml of carrier oil

Healing, aches and pains, or temporary use: follow a 5% dilution ratio or 8-10 drops per 10ml of carrier oil

A note on quality

Low-quality essential oils can be filled with additives and are more likely to cause sensitivity or irritation. When you’re choosing your essential oils, look for third-party testing. This testing is crucial to ensure quality and transparency. With high-quality brands, you should see the GC/MS results right on the website on the shop page for each individual oil.

How To Do a Patch Test

  1. Start by diluting your essential oil

  2. Place 1-2 drops of a diluted essential oil on the inside of your elbow

  3. Apply a bandage. Do not get this area wet during the test.

  4. Leave the bandage on for at least 24 hours. If you feel the onset of any irritation or if any reaction, immediately remove the bandage and carefully wash the area with mild soap and water.

If no irritation occurs after 24 hours, the essential oil, in its diluted form, is safe for you to use on your skin.
