5 Ways to reduce synthetic fragrance in your home

I believe there is a balance with holistic living. I always say to choose clean where you can, and find what works for you. One thing that’s a non-negotiable for me is synthetic fragrance.

Not only are many synthetic fragrances petroleum-based, but they also contain chemicals such as phthalates (endocrine disruptors) and carcinogens.

Synthetic fragrances are also a major contributor to indoor air pollution. Many have been shown to emit more than 100 VOCs, including some that are classified as toxic or hazardous by federal laws. Even products advertised as “green”, “natural”, or “organic” emitted as many hazardous chemicals as standard ones.

Trade Secret

You’re probably asking yourself the question, “how can they get away with this?!” Aside from the loose standards for cleaning products, personal care products, etc., companies can hide these shady ingredients behind the label of fragrance. They can classify this as a trade secret and avoid having to disclose ingredients. When you see fragrance on a label, know that it could be hundreds of questionable chemicals that can cause a host of health issues.

Reducing fragrance doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are 5 simple ways you can reduce synthetic fragrances in your home!

Perfume

Perfume, body sprays, and scented body washes might be the first to come to mind when you think of synthetic fragrances in your home. While it is a good idea to avoid these products, that doesn’t mean you have to give up on smelling nice or having a signature scent!  Essential oils can be used to create a natural “perfume” with added therapeutic benefits.

DIY Essential Oil “Perfume”

In a 10ml roller bottle, add 10-15 drops of essential oils and fill the rest with a carrier oil.
Apply on your wrists, necks, or wherever you apply perfume!

Here are a few of my favorite combos -

Happy Lavender - Lavender and Orange

Flower Power - Geranium, Lavender, and Orange

Grounding Earthy - Frankincense, Patchouli, and Cedarwood

In the shower

You don’t have to compromise on a cozy scented shower routine because Plaine Products uses natural fragrances in all of their products! The rosemary vanilla mint is my favorite - the perfect cozy and cool scent to wake you up and keep you smelling fresh!

Air Fresheners

Room sprays and plug-ins can be some of the most toxic, fragrance-filled products out there. If you like to keep your home feeling fresh without filling up your diffuser or releasing toxins into the air, Pluggy is perfect for you. It works like a traditional fragrance plug-in, but instead of toxic chemicals, it uses your fav essential oils! Super easy, extra safe, and you’ll get the benefits of your oils throughout your home.

Laundry Detergent

Laundry detergent used to be a tough one for me! I like my clothes smelling and looking extra clean, so finding a natural option took some trial and error. Here are a few great brands that are low tox and eco friendly

Candles and Incense

Candles contain synthetic fragrances and many other harmful ingredients. Soy wax candles scented with essential oils or beeswax candles are great alternatives.

If incense is more your vibe, I love the brand Sea Witch Botanicals. They use all-natural ingredients and are eco-friendly. I shared more about them in this blog post!

If you’re looking to live a little less toxic, reducing synthetic fragrance is a great place to start!
