Using essential oils with pets
Everything you need to know about using essential oils safely and effectively with your pets!
As a pet mom myself, I know how important it is to make sure you're making the right choices for the safety and health of your furry family members.
When talking about essential oils, I often get asked the question, “Is this safe for pets?!”
If you do a quick google search, you may find differing opinions and confusing information. I’ll break it down for you so that you can make an informed decision when it comes to using essential oils with your pets!
Essential oils can be just as beneficial to your pets as they are to you! However, just like with humans, there is safety information you should keep in mind.
Oils to Avoid With Pets
While many essential oils are perfectly safe to use around your pets, there are some you may want to avoid. Certain oils could potentially cause a negative reaction such as; difficulty breathing, tremors, or vomiting. If this occurs, contact your pet’s veterinarian. It is important to remember that, just like humans, every pet is different.
Always consult with your pet’s veterinarian for the best advice to follow!

How to Use Oils with Pets
When using oils with pets, keep in mind the same safety information as you would when using oils on yourself!
Always dilute (for topical use with dogs only)
Never ingest
Start slow
Do not apply topically (cats)
When you have a new oil you want to use around your pet, let them sniff the bottle with the lid closed to see how they react.
If you are diffusing, start with just a drop or two.
When using oils topically with your dog, add a drop to your hands, rub them together, and allow your dog to come to you. To avoid scaring your pet, don't approach them with the oil on your hands.
It’s important to remember that pets are WAY more sensitive to smell than humans. Have you ever visited a friend's house, and their dog instantly smells the scent of your pet on your clothing? A human would never notice the smell, but your pet is a whole other story. That is why your pet may leave the room or seem irritated if you’re diffusing a strong scent!
Even if an oil is safe to use with a pet, that doesn't mean they will like the scent. Just as with humans, every pet is different. They may not like the smell of the oils you are using. If you’re using a new oil, ensure it is in an open area, or your pet can easily leave the room.
