Why you're supposed to avoid the sun after using citrus oils

Citrus Oils and The Sun

Why are you supposed to avoid the sun after using lemon oil?

This is a common question essential oil users want to know, so let’s talk about it!

You may have heard the term “photosensitivity” surrounding citrus essential oils, or you may be wondering why you’re cautioned to avoid the sun after applying an essential oil like lemon or orange.

Photosensitivity, or sometimes known as photoirritation or phototoxicity, is a chemically induced skin irritation. It can occur when you apply certain essential oils topically and expose your skin to the sun soon afterward.

What makes some essential oils photosensitive?

Some essential oils, mainly citrus oils, contain compounds known as furanocoumarins, which greatly increase UV sensitivity. Citrus oils aren’t the only photosensitive oils, so always read the label before applying any essential oils!

Common photosensitive essential oils

  • Angelica

  • Bergamot

  • Bitter Orange

  • Grapefruit

  • Lemon

  • Lemongrass

  • Lime

  • Mandarin Leaf

  • Tangerine

How to use photosensitive essential oils

Apply at night

If you want to use a photosensitive oil in your skincare routine or otherwise, stick to applying it at night or 12-18 hours before being exposed to the sun.

Keep it covered

Covering the area where you applied a photosensitive oil will reduce the risk of irritation. If you want to use lemon oil topically to give your immune system a boost, apply it to the bottoms of your feet, away from the sun!

Remember - when using an essential oil, always read the label and follow proper directions for use!
