Essential oil safety 101

With big reward comes big responsibility. Essential oils are powerful and should be used responsibly and properly for maximum benefit. Below are 3 beginner tips when using essential oils!

  • Always dilute with a carrier oil when applying topically:

Some essential oils will say that they’re safe to apply directly on skin. However, whether it's safe or not (it depends on the essential oil), essential oils are absorbed into your skin much more efficiently with a carrier oil - making them more effective. So for safety and efficacy, I dilute all essential oils when using topically. Make a roller bottle or pour ½ tsp of a carrier oil in your hand and add a drop of an essential oil to dilute.

  • Avoid topical use of citrus oils before going in the sun:

Citrus oils may turn phototoxic when exposed to the sun. This means it can cause redness, a rash, or even blisters. Use in the evening to reduce the risk of reaction.

  • Check the label before consuming internally:

This is a controversial topic in the essential oil world: are essential oils safe to consume internally? If your essential oils are 100% pure and what they say they are, SOME oils say they are safe to consume internally. If the bottle has “Supplement Facts” clearly listed on the bottle - the brand is giving you the clear to consume internally. If it does NOT have supplement facts listed, do not consume internally. Do not consume more than 20 drops of essential oils within a 24 hours period.
