The DOs and DON'Ts of using essential oils with kids

Not all essential oils are safe for kids, some can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, and even trigger seizures.

But when using Kid Safe oils properly, they can be extremely beneficial for things like nap/bedtime, eczema, cradle cap, dandruff, boo boos, bellyaches, growing pains, etc.

Here are the DO’s and the DON’Ts of using essential oils with kids!

DO DILUTE:

Dilute appropriately with a carrier oil before topical application - check the dilution chart first. This helps reduce risk of skin irritation and also helps their skin absorb the essential oils better. I recommend diluting with a carrier oil for adults as well.

Dilution by age:

  • 6-24 months old: 0.25-0.50% dilution

  • 2-6 years old: 1.0-2.0% dilution

  • 6-15 years old: 1.5-3% dilution

  • 15+ years old: 2.5-5.0% dilution

DO USE A CARRIER OIL:

A carrier oil is what we use to dilute the essential oil. It can be a skin safe oil such as coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, etc, or an unscented lotion.

DO PATCH TEST:

Dilute and apply a small amount of essential oil to your child’s inner wrist to make sure your child’s skin isn’t irritated by the essential oil.
