4 Tips for eating vegan on a budget

When I share about being vegan, people often tell me they want to work towards a vegan diet, but it is too expensive. And while the trendy vegan snacks on the shelves of Whole Foods have a shockingly high price tag, adding more vegan-friendly foods can be easily tailored to fit your budget. Many people find that their weekly shopping trip actually becomes more affordable after adopting a more plant-based lifestyle.

If you are wanting to go vegan or you're just wanting to incorporate healthier foods into your diet, don't let your budget hold you back! I am here to free you of your limiting beliefs and give you some practical tips for adopting a more vegan-centered diet on a budget!

1. Eat Seasonally

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are some of the most affordable foods out there! They are also the healthiest option for you, the environment, and your wallet.

2. Don’t Buy “Vegan” Products

Now let’s not get this twisted...on a Friday night I can slam a bag of impossible chicky nuggets and finish it off with some dairy-free ice cream. These, however, are the exception, not the rule. I’m grateful to have these vegan options when I want to treat myself, but day to day we opt for fresh foods over packaged or prepared options. These vegan food options are fun and delicious, but the goal is to incorporate more fresh, whole, plant-based foods, not just replace one processed food for another!

3. Plan Ahead

This may sound simple, but it can make a huge difference! Instead of running to the store and grabbing what you think you might need or what looks good, plan your meals ahead of time. Go through your fridge, your pantry, see what you have, then pull a few new recipes to try. When you head to the store, you’ll be more prepared, you’ll only buy what you need, and your wallet will thank you!

4. Meal Prep When Possible

Instead of grabbing a $15 salad because you need a quick, vegan option during your lunch break, spend some time on the weekend prepping salads or buddha bowls to bring with you to work each day! This makes getting out the door in the morning a little easier. It also ensures you have a healthy, hearty, vegan lunch that won’t break the bank.

I hope you found these tips helpful! You absolutely can incorporate more plants into your diet in an affordable way. You do not need to throw out everything in your kitchen and go vegan tomorrow, but beginning to make changes to incorporate vegan foods can be beneficial for your health, the environment, and yes...even your budget!
