The Benefits of Essential Oils for Mental Health: How to Use Them for Stress and Anxiety Relief

Essential oils have been used for centuries for their therapeutic benefits, and recent research has shown that they can also have a positive impact on mental health. From reducing stress and anxiety to improving mood and cognitive function, essential oils offer a natural and effective way to support mental well-being… and I think we can all benefit from that.

One of the primary ways that essential oils can benefit mental health is by reducing stress and anxiety. The aroma of certain essential oils have been shown to activate the brain's amygdala, the part of the brain that plays a role in regulating emotions.

For example, lavender essential oil has a calming effect on the nervous system and can help reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.

To use lavender essential oil for stress and anxiety, you can do these things:

  • diffuse it in your home or office

  • add a few drops to your bathwater with a carrier oil

  • mix it with a carrier oil and apply it topically to your skin (my fav place to apply is on the bottoms of my feet and along pulse points like wrist and neck)

In addition to reducing stress and anxiety, essential oils can also improve mood and cognitive function! Some essential oils, such as peppermint and rosemary, have been shown to increase alertness and focus, making them useful for boosting cognitive function and combating mental fatigue.

To use peppermint and rosemary essential oils for improved mood and cognitive function, you can try these:

  • diffuse them in your workspace

  • add a few drops to a handkerchief and inhale deeply

  • or mix them with a carrier oil and apply them topically to your temples and neck. **Check the safety guide (link the words) for the safety tips of using certain oils*

One of the best things about using essential oils for mental health is that they are easy to incorporate into your daily routine. You can diffuse them in your home or office to create a calming and uplifting environment, or you can use them in DIY skincare and wellness products to enjoy their therapeutic benefits on the go.

If you're new to using essential oils for mental health, it's important to remember that not all essential oils are created equal. Look for high-quality, pure essential oils from reputable sources, and always follow the instructions on the label to avoid any adverse effects. I’ll be launching my own brand very soon, but until then, here’s a list of oils I love!

In conclusion, essential oils can be a powerful tool for supporting mental health! From reducing stress and anxiety to improving mood and cognitive function, these natural remedies offer a safe and effective way to promote overall well-being. If you're looking for a natural way to support your mental health, consider incorporating essential oils into your daily routine.
