My Low-Tox Makeup Routine

You may be aware of ingredients in your food or cleaning products, but what about your makeup? People who wear makeup can be exposed to more toxins, and often on a daily basis.

Makeup, skincare, and other cosmetic products can contain harmful toxins that affect your hormones, cause allergies and irritation, and may be linked to various health problems.

You may think what you’re purchasing is totally safe, but the truth is cosmetic products are poorly monitored in the United States. It’s important to do your research and make sure you’re choosing products that are truly clean.

If you’re curious about how your products rank, take a look at the ThinkDirty app or the EWG Skin Deep Database. Both of these will rate your products for you and break down any potentially harmful ingredients.

My Low-Tox Makeup Routine

Finding low-tox brands can be challenging, but over the years, I’ve found several products I love from various brands. Here are a few favorites…

Concealer

Mad Hippie’s CC Cream ($18.90) is my go-to for covering up pimples, and I like using a darker shade as a mini contour and bronzer!

Foundation

Many liquid foundations can have eczema-triggering ingredients such as diazolidinyl urea or synthetic fragrances that can irritate your skin. Epilynx allergen-free moisturizing liquid foundation ($15.90) is my favorite. It’s made will clean, all vegan ingredients that nourish and hydrate your skin and is one of the most affordable ones too! They have 19 different skin tones to choose from, so you can find your perfect match!

Mascara

Whether you’re shopping clean or not, finding the perfect mascara can be tricky. Luckily I’ve found a few favorites with low-tox ingredients!

This 100% Pure Maracuja Oil Mascara ($28) is pigmented with fruit, smells delish, and is made with 100% pure ingredients - this company really lives up to its name!

Thrive cosmetics ($22.32) is my go-to daily mascara. The brush is silicone, which helps to lengthen your lashes while avoiding clumps. Washing this one off is a little funky. It comes off in pieces when you wash your face, but it stays put during the day.

Epilynx mascara ($14.99) is another one I’m always reaching for. I typically wear the color black, but sometimes layer it with blue if I’m feeling spicy! This brand has my heart. The owner really takes the time to research safe ingredients to create high-quality products!

Blush

One of the main ingredients you want to avoid when shopping for blush is talc. Talc can be contaminated with asbestos fibers, which leads to respiratory irritation and cancer. The National Toxicology Panel showed that cosmetic-grade talc free of asbestos is a form of magnesium silicate that also can be toxic and carcinogenic. Yikes.

I have two favorite blushes that I use on rotation. Both are extremely high-quality and made with similar ingredients, but each offers different shades. I love them both based on ingredients and use both to switch up the shades, depending on the vibe I want to go for.

If I want a softer pink shade, I’ll reach for 100% Pure Lip and Cheek Tint ($30). It glides on smoothly and is easy to rub in my fingers or a blender ball.

For darker and deeper shades, I like Mad Hippie Lip and Cheek Tint ($19.80). I apply it using my fingers, so it’s super simple, and I love that it doubles as a lip tint.
